3D and Texture Generation Basics
Understand AI generated 3D models and materials and when they are good enough to use
A taste of a lesson
I made a 3D chair from a photo with AI. It looks great in the preview, but in my game engine it lags. Why?
AI generated meshes are often very dense: hundreds of thousands of tiny triangles where a game chair might need a few thousand. The preview hides that, but a game has to draw every triangle each frame. Open it in a 3D program and look at the wireframe and polygon count. Then reduce it with decimation, or rebuild a simple clean mesh over it and bake the detail into a normal map. What polygon count does your chair have right now?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Explain meshes, topology, UVs and PBR material maps in plain terms
- Generate seamless textures and check their material maps
- Inspect AI generated 3D models for common problems
- Decide whether an asset is usable as is or needs cleanup
Lesson plan
- 1 3D basics in plain words Understand meshes, topology and polygon counts. Start
- 2 Materials and texture maps Know what each PBR map does. Start
- 3 Generating textures Create tileable textures and material maps with AI. Start
- 4 Generating 3D models Try image to 3D and text to 3D and inspect results. Start
- 5 Good enough or cleanup? Match asset quality to its intended use. Start

About this tutor
For designers, game hobbyists, product people and 3D beginners curious about AI tools that generate 3D models and textures. This tutor explains the basics in plain terms: meshes, topology, UV maps, physically based materials and their maps, and what AI generators produce today. You will learn to generate seamless textures and material maps, try image to 3D and text to 3D for props and concepts, inspect results for common problems, and decide whether an asset is fine for a concept render or needs cleanup for games, animation or printing.

Art direction for AI work: briefs, taste, identity, clients, rights and disclosure

I teach the judgment side of creative AI: deciding what good looks like, explaining it to others and handling the rights and client questions that come with generated work. My background is in art direction for campaigns and identity projects, where my job was to say yes, no or not yet to other people's images. I teach that same eye....
