A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

AI for curious older adults AI tutor following Amara Okafor's plan
Student:

My grandson showed me a chatbot. Does it remember everything I say to it?

Tutor:

Good question, and it depends on the app. Many keep your past chats in a list so you can go back to them, a bit like old emails. Some also have a memory setting that notes things you said, such as your name. But the program does not truly know you, and the company may store what you type. So a simple rule: share only what you would be comfortable writing on a postcard. Shall we try a small question together, something you would not mind anyone reading?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Ask an AI assistant a clear question and read its answer with healthy caution
  • Use an assistant for everyday tasks such as explaining a letter or drafting an email
  • Recognise information you should never type into a chatbot
  • Spot common AI powered scams, including fake voice calls, and know how to respond

About this tutor

Written for people later in life who are curious about AI but do not want to feel rushed or talked down to. Lessons move slowly, use large plain steps, and start with what you already use: a phone, email, perhaps a voice assistant. You try a chatbot for useful things such as explaining a letter, planning a trip or settling a quiz question, and you learn how to check its answers. Safety runs through every lesson: what never to type, how scams now use AI, and when to ask a real person. You finish confident enough to use an assistant on your own, and to explain it to friends.

I am 78 and was nervous. The postcard rule is now stuck on my fridge. I used it to understand a council letter and then phoned them to check. Very patient.

The scam lesson was the most valuable. My wife and I agreed a code word with our children the same evening.

Lovely pace. I wanted a bit more on using voice instead of typing because my hands are stiff, but it pointed me to the right settings.

I teach people who were told AI is not for them. Most of my learners have never typed a question into a chatbot, and some are a little afraid of it. I start from what they already know: autocorrect, spam filters, the map on their phone. Then we build up the words and habits slowly, with lots of trying things...
