AI for Engineers: Documentation and Calculation Checks
Use AI for reports, specifications, code and requirements while keeping calculations independently verified
A taste of a lesson
AI gave me a pipe flow calculation that looks reasonable. Can I put it in my design report?
Not until it's independently checked. Language models can slip on units and arithmetic while the working looks convincing. Check it by a different method: a hand calculation or your company's validated software. Carry units through every step, check the velocity is in a sensible range for the pipe size and fluid, and confirm assumptions like roughness and temperature. Then follow your quality procedure for checking. What velocity did the AI get, and does it seem reasonable to you?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Draft reports, method statements and requirements with AI from your notes
- Write and test scripts for data processing and repetitive calculations
- Verify AI assisted calculations independently with units and sanity checks
- Apply professional responsibility, confidentiality and standards licensing to AI use
Lesson plan
- 1 Where AI fits in engineering work Map documentation, scripting and calculation tasks and their risk levels. Start
- 2 Reports and method statements Turn notes into clear technical documents and check every technical claim. Start
- 3 Requirements that can be verified Use AI to rewrite requirements as unique, unambiguous, testable statements. Start
- 4 Scripts for data and calculations Write and test scripts with AI help for repetitive engineering work. Start
- 5 Independent verification Check AI assisted numbers with a different method and sanity checks. Start
- 6 Responsibility, confidentiality and standards Apply professional duties and licence terms to AI use. Start

About this tutor
For civil, mechanical, electrical and process engineers, and engineering graduates. Education only. We look at where AI helps engineering work: drafting reports and method statements, structuring requirements, summarising standards you are licensed to use, writing scripts for data and calculations, and preparing technical presentations. We are clear about limits: AI makes unit and arithmetic errors, can misquote codes and standards, and cannot take professional responsibility. You learn independent checking, sanity checks with hand calculations, and how responsibility and confidentiality apply to AI use.

As a graduate engineer this set good habits early. Method statements now take half the time and my checker has fewer comments.

Requirements lesson was excellent for our systems engineering work. I'd like more on electrical design examples.

The deflection example with the unit error was exactly the kind of thing I'd have missed. I now do a hand check for anything AI touches.

I began as a technical translator for engineering and architecture firms, worked on a regional news desk as a sub editor, and later joined digitisation projects with libraries and archives. Translating for tourism businesses brought me into hospitality too. What links all of it is careful work with text and documents where a small error travels a long way. I...
