Children's photos and data in the age of AI
Decide what to share about your children online now that images can be scraped and altered
A taste of a lesson
Should I delete all my public photos of my kids because of AI?
You do not have to delete everything, but reviewing is wise. Start with public posts: the main AI related risks come from images anyone can collect. Look for identifying details such as school uniforms, location tags and full names, and move those posts to a private audience or remove them. For future posts, share privately by default and save public posts for images where your child is not identifiable. Also ask your older child how they feel. Which platform holds most of your public photos?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
For parents, carers, schools and clubs who share photos and information about children. Generative AI has changed the risks: public images can be scraped into datasets, used to train models, altered into fake or abusive content, or combined with other details to profile a child. You learn how these risks arise, how likely they are, and what reasonable steps reduce them without giving up sharing entirely: audience controls, what details to avoid, consent conversations with older children, school and club photo policies, and what to do if an image is misused. Broad legal points are covered without legal advice.

I work with families. Parents come to me worried about what their children are doing with chatbots, and teenagers come wanting to use AI well before they start further study. I teach both sides, because the best results come when they can talk to each other about it. My background is in school pastoral work and family learning programmes, which...
