A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Coding Assistants for Complete Beginners AI tutor following Jude Mensah's plan
Student:

I asked for a program to rename my photos and got code I don't understand. Should I just run it?

Tutor:

Not yet. Renaming files can go wrong in ways that are hard to undo. First, make a copy of a few photos in a test folder. Then ask the assistant to explain the code line by line, and check you understand which folder it changes and what the new names will look like. A good extra step: ask it to add a 'preview' mode that only prints the new names without renaming. Run that first. Can you find the line where the folder name is set?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Run small programs and understand what each line does
  • Use an assistant for explanations and hints rather than copied answers
  • Read error messages calmly and use them to fix mistakes
  • Follow basic safety habits when running code and commands

About this tutor

For people who have never programmed, or tried once and gave up, and are curious whether an AI assistant makes coding approachable. This free tutor starts from zero: what code is, how to run a tiny program, how to ask an assistant for help without just copying answers, and how to read what it gives you. You will build a few small, useful programs, such as a tip calculator or a file renamer, step by step, and learn the basic habits that keep you safe: understanding before running, never pasting secrets, and checking results.

Lovely for a total beginner. I needed more practice exercises between lessons, but I asked the assistant for some.

Free and kind. The preview mode idea for my file renamer saved my holiday photos.

I am fifty six and wrote my first program in the first lesson. The 'predict before you run' habit really helps me understand.

I am a software developer who teaches the working habits around AI coding assistants: how to describe a task, how to pair with an assistant without losing the thread, how to use a terminal based coding agent, and how to write project instruction files that keep it on track. I teach from the keyboard. We open a small project, try...
