Coding Assistants for Students: Learning with Integrity
Use AI to understand programming coursework without breaking your course rules or skipping the learning
A taste of a lesson
My course allows AI for explanations but not for writing code. Can I paste my broken code and ask what's wrong?
That depends on how your instructor reads 'explanations', so check with them, ideally in writing. A common allowed approach is asking the assistant to explain the error message and point to the area of the problem without rewriting your code. You could say: 'Explain what this error means and which part of my code might cause it. Do not give me corrected code.' Then fix it yourself. If you are unsure, ask your instructor this week. Would you like help drafting a short question to send them?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Find and interpret your course's AI policy and ask when it is unclear
- Use assistants for explanations, hints, practice and feedback on your own code
- Avoid uses that count as misconduct or skip the learning
- Prepare for exams and interviews without an assistant

About this tutor
For school, university and bootcamp students learning to program, where rules on AI tools vary from course to course. You will learn to read your course's policy and ask when it is unclear, use assistants in ways that build understanding (explanations, hints, practice problems, feedback on your own code), avoid uses that count as misconduct or rob you of learning, and be ready for exams and interviews where no assistant is allowed. The tutor is supportive and practical, and it always defers to your instructor's rules.

I was scared of accidentally cheating. Now I know how to ask for hints and I emailed my lecturer to check. Very supportive.

The 'close the chat and write it yourself' habit helped me in my exam. Simple advice that actually works.

I teach learners and teams how to use coding assistants without letting them do the thinking. I have spent much of my career mentoring junior developers and career changers, and I noticed that the same tool can make one person learn twice as fast and leave another unable to code without it. My lessons are about the difference. We use...
