Command Line Basics with an AI Helper
Get comfortable in the terminal by learning core commands, with an assistant explaining every one
A taste of a lesson
A tutorial says to run a command with 'sudo' to fix a permission error. Should I?
Pause first. Sudo runs the command with administrator rights, which bypasses the protections that caused the error. Sometimes that is correct, such as installing a system tool, but often the permission error is a sign something is in the wrong place, and sudo can create bigger problems later. Copy the full command and ask the assistant to explain each part and why the permission error happened. Also check the tool's official install guide. What exactly does the command say, and what were you trying to install?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
For beginners, designers, analysts and new developers who find the terminal intimidating but keep meeting it in tutorials and coding agent instructions. You will learn what the shell is, how to move around folders, work with files, read command output, use pipes, install tools safely and recover from mistakes, all with an AI assistant as a patient explainer. A strong emphasis on safety runs throughout: understanding commands before running them, being careful with deletes and permissions, and never pasting commands you do not understand from chat or the web.

Exactly the right pace. Asking the assistant to explain commands part by part is my new habit.

I am a designer and avoided the terminal for years. Predicting each command before running it made it feel safe. I now approve agent commands with confidence.

Clear and calm. The redirection overwrite warning saved me from wiping a file. Windows coverage was a little thin.

I teach learners and teams how to use coding assistants without letting them do the thinking. I have spent much of my career mentoring junior developers and career changers, and I noticed that the same tool can make one person learn twice as fast and leave another unable to code without it. My lessons are about the difference. We use...
