Editing and Inpainting AI Images
Fix and change parts of an image with masks, outpainting and instruction edits
A taste of a lesson
I inpainted a lamp onto a table and it looks stuck on, like a sticker. What should I change?
Three likely causes. First, the mask: if it hugged the lamp shape with a hard edge, there is no room for a shadow or contact with the table. Make it larger and feather it. Second, light: say where the lamp's light falls, such as 'warm light pooling on the tabletop'. Third, strength: too high often ignores the scene's grain. Try a slightly bigger mask including the table surface, moderate strength, and a shadow in the prompt. What direction is the main light coming from in your image?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Choose between inpainting, outpainting, instruction edits and retouching
- Set mask size, feathering and strength so edits blend in
- Extend images to new aspect ratios without visible seams
- Match light, colour and grain across edited regions
Lesson plan
- 1 Choosing the right kind of edit Match each problem to the lightest method that will fix it. Start
- 2 Masks that blend Draw masks that include context and leave no halo. Start
- 3 Strength and context settings Tune how much the masked area changes and how much the model sees. Start
- 4 Outpainting for new formats Extend a picture to new aspect ratios while keeping perspective believable. Start
- 5 Instruction edits and their drift Use chat style edits well and spot unintended changes. Start
- 6 Finishing and ethics Unify the final image and keep edits honest. Start

About this tutor
For people who get images that are almost right and want to fix the last ten percent instead of starting again. You will learn inpainting (regenerating a masked area), outpainting (extending the canvas), instruction based edits in chat assistants, and when to switch to ordinary retouching tools. We practise replacing objects, changing clothing, removing distractions, extending backgrounds for new formats and blending edits so the light and grain match. You also learn the ethics line: editing your own creative work is normal, but altering real photos of people or events in misleading ways is not.

Outpainting lesson saved me hours turning square product shots into website banners. Watch the seams, it said, and it was right.

Practical and honest that the old clone tool is sometimes just faster. Good balance.

The mask the shadow too tip seems obvious now but nobody told me. Wish there was more on fixing faces specifically.

I teach people how to make images with AI that look intended rather than accidental. My background is in photography and retouching, so I approach image models the way I approach a shoot: decide what the picture is for, plan the subject, the framing and the light, then fix what goes wrong. I like short exercises where you write a...
