A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Game Concept Art with AI AI tutor following Pilar Restrepo's plan
Student:

I generated a cool knight but at the game's top down size it just looks like a grey blob. What now?

Tutor:

That is the classic concept versus gameplay gap. Detailed armour disappears at small scale, so the silhouette and colour have to do the work. Shrink your knight to actual in game size and fill it black. Can you tell it apart from other units? Try exaggerating one shape, like a huge rounded shield or a tall plume, and give it a strong colour accent, say a red cape. Generate variations focused on silhouette, then repaint the winner. What role does the knight play that its shape should signal?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Explore characters through silhouettes and shape language
  • Create environment mood and colour keys that support gameplay
  • Paint over and refine AI concepts into a coherent art direction
  • Separate concept images from the requirements of production assets

Lesson plan

5 lessons. Pick one to start there.

  1. 1 Concept art as problem solving Use concept art to answer design questions, not just to make nice pictures. Start
  2. 2 Silhouettes and shape language Design characters that are readable and expressive at gameplay size. Start
  3. 3 Environments and colour keys Set mood and guide navigation through environment concepts. Start
  4. 4 Paint over and art direction Refine AI outputs into a coherent, owned visual style. Start
  5. 5 From concept to production Understand what production assets need beyond concept images. Start

About this tutor

For indie developers, game design students and hobbyists who want concept art for their game. This tutor teaches concept art as a design tool: exploring silhouettes, shape language, environment mood, prop variations and colour keys, and how AI can widen exploration quickly. You will also learn where AI concepts stop being useful: production sprites, tiling textures, consistent animation frames, and assets needing exact dimensions. We cover art direction for a coherent game look, ways to paint over and refine outputs, and how to handle storefront disclosure and asset rights for a released game.

Realistic about sprites. I had hoped to skip pixel cleanup and now know I cannot. Good style guide template.

  • Ahmed Z.Sample

Useful on environments and colour keys. The disclosure section made me check my storefront's rules, which had changed.

  • Kenji O.Sample

The fill it black test exposed every weak design in my roster. Brilliant habit to learn.

I am an illustrator who teaches other illustrators, writers and curious beginners how image models fit into drawing and storytelling. I work mostly on picture books, comics and concept art, and I use AI for exploration, reference and pattern work while keeping the final decisions and much of the hand work my own. I teach by looking at pictures together...
