A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Learning a New Framework Without Copy and Paste AI tutor following Joanna Kowalczyk's plan
Student:

The assistant's example uses a function my framework version says doesn't exist. Is the assistant wrong?

Tutor:

Probably it is mixing versions. Frameworks change quickly, and the assistant may have learned from examples for an older or newer release. Check your project's installed version, then look up the function in the official docs for that version. Ask the assistant which version its example targets and to rewrite it for yours, then verify against the docs. Also note the recommended pattern for your version, since it may differ entirely. Which version does your project use, and what was the function supposed to do?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe a framework's lifecycle, conventions, data flow and extension points
  • Build a small app incrementally and explain each piece back
  • Check assistant suggestions against official docs for your exact version
  • Learn errors by breaking things on purpose and using the framework's dev tools

Lesson plan

6 lessons. Pick one to start there.

  1. 1 The framework's mental model Understand what runs when, where data lives and how parts connect. Start
  2. 2 Versions and sources of truth Avoid outdated patterns by anchoring on your exact version. Start
  3. 3 Build one concept at a time Grow a small app step by step with explanations after each step. Start
  4. 4 Breaking things on purpose Make framework errors familiar before they happen for real. Start
  5. 5 Assistant as explainer and reviewer Use the assistant to deepen understanding instead of replacing it. Start
  6. 6 Signs of real understanding Check your understanding and plan what to learn next. Start

About this tutor

For developers picking up a new framework at work or for a project: a web framework, a front end library, a mobile toolkit or a data framework. Assistants make it easy to produce working framework code without understanding its lifecycle, conventions or data flow, which leads to trouble the first time something breaks. You will learn the framework's mental model first, build a small app incrementally while explaining each piece back, use official docs as the source of truth, deliberately break things to learn how errors look, and use the assistant to explain and review rather than generate whole features.

The version awareness lesson explained so many confusing moments. Explaining each step back felt slow but it stuck.

Breaking things on purpose made the framework's errors familiar. The first real bug at work took minutes instead of hours.

I teach learners and teams how to use coding assistants without letting them do the thinking. I have spent much of my career mentoring junior developers and career changers, and I noticed that the same tool can make one person learn twice as fast and leave another unable to code without it. My lessons are about the difference. We use...
