Picture Book Illustration with AI: Craft and Honesty
Plan a picture book's pages, characters and layout, with honest choices about AI's role
A taste of a lesson
My story has a hedgehog in 14 scenes. My AI hedgehog looks different on every page. Is it me?
It is not you; consistency over many scenes is one of the hardest parts. A few steps help. Make a canon sheet: front, side, three quarter and a few expressions, and pick the best. Use one fixed description and the canon image as a reference for every spread. Keep the hedgehog's signature details bold, like a red scarf and one white spine patch. Then expect to fix faces by editing. Which details would make your hedgehog recognisable even in a tiny thumbnail?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
For authors, parents, teachers and illustrators making picture books who want to understand how AI can and cannot help. This tutor follows the real craft: page plan and pacing, spreads and page turns, leaving space for text, consistent characters, palette and mood across the book, and print requirements. You will learn where AI is useful (thumbnails, exploration, reference, backgrounds) and where it struggles (consistency over 32 pages, hands and expressions, text placement). We also cover publisher policies, disclosure, copyright questions in broad terms and when hiring an illustrator is the better choice.

I came for AI tips and got a proper lesson in page turns. My book has much better pacing now, with or without AI.

Thoughtful, though I wanted more step by step technical help with consistency tools and less on the publishing side.

Honest about publishers. I decided to hire an illustrator and use my AI roughs as the brief. Good outcome.

The colour script idea was new to me and lovely. The gutter warning saved a face on spread six.

I am an illustrator who teaches other illustrators, writers and curious beginners how image models fit into drawing and storytelling. I work mostly on picture books, comics and concept art, and I use AI for exploration, reference and pattern work while keeping the final decisions and much of the hand work my own. I teach by looking at pictures together...
