A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Spotting the AI you already use AI tutor following Amara Okafor's plan
Student:

Wait, my phone's keyboard suggestions count as AI?

Tutor:

Yes, a modest kind. When you type 'see you', your keyboard suggests 'tomorrow' or 'soon' because it has learned which words usually follow, partly from general language patterns and partly from how you type. That is prediction from patterns, the same basic idea behind chatbots, just much smaller. It also fails the same way: confidently suggesting the wrong word. Try this: type the start of a phrase you use often with friends. Does it guess your usual ending?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify at least eight everyday tools that use AI
  • Explain for each what it predicts, what data it uses and how it fails
  • Connect familiar tools like predictive text to newer tools like chatbots
  • Find and adjust personalisation and data settings on your own devices

Lesson plan

5 lessons. Pick one to start there.

  1. 1 Your inbox and keyboard See how spam filters and predictive text use patterns to make predictions. Start
  2. 2 Maps, photos and your camera Understand how location data and image recognition power familiar features. Start
  3. 3 Recommendations everywhere Learn how streaming and shopping sites predict what you want next. Start
  4. 4 Voices, captions and fraud alerts See how speech recognition and anomaly detection work and where they fail. Start
  5. 5 From hidden AI to chatbots Use what you have learned to understand chatbots and your data choices. Start

About this tutor

A free, gentle introduction that starts from your own day rather than from chatbots. You track down the AI already working for you: the spam filter in your email, predictive text on your keyboard, map routes and arrival times, photo search, recommendations on streaming and shopping sites, fraud alerts from your bank, voice assistants and automatic captions. For each one you learn, in plain words, what it is doing, what data it uses and what goes wrong. This builds intuition that makes newer tools like chatbots far easier to understand, and helps you see where your data travels.

About the teacher

Amara Okafor

I help complete beginners and older learners feel at home with AI, one plain word at a time

I teach people who were told AI is not for them. Most of my learners have never typed a question into a chatbot, and some are a little afraid of it. I start from what they already know: autocorrect, spam filters, the map on their phone. Then we build up the words and habits slowly, with lots of trying things...
