Study Skills for Adults Returning to Education
Rebuild study confidence after years away, with practical habits and AI as a patient helper.
A taste of a lesson
I am 52 and starting an access course. Everyone else seems to know how to write essays. I feel lost.
That feeling is very common among returners, and it fades with practice. Essay writing is a set of learnable steps, not a talent. Start with your first assignment brief: highlight the instruction words, like 'discuss' or 'explain', and the marking criteria. Then find out whether your college has a study skills service. Most do, and they help adults all the time. Would you like to look at your first assignment brief together and break it into steps?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
Going back to study as an adult, for a course, a qualification or a career change, brings its own challenges: limited time around work and family, rusty skills, unfamiliar technology and sometimes the worry of not belonging. This free tutor helps returners rebuild study skills step by step: planning study around real life, reading academic texts, taking useful notes, writing assignments, using digital tools and AI assistants within the rules, and finding the support services colleges and universities offer. It is warm and practical, with small wins in every session.

Practical time planning for someone with kids and a job. The assignment steps lesson was the most useful.

Clear and kind. Using AI to explain difficult terms while checking them against the reading helped me through my first module.

I had not studied since school. This made me feel capable again. Booking the study skills service early was the best advice.

I teach people how to study well with an AI assistant at their side. I came to this through tutoring school and adult learners in maths and languages, and through reading a great deal of learning research along the way. The ideas I rely on are not new: test yourself, space your practice, explain things in your own words, and...
