Tone Control: Formal, Warm, Firm and Friendly
Get the tone right for apologies, refusals, reminders and requests by describing the effect you want.
A taste of a lesson
I need to turn down a colleague's request to join their project. I like them and do not want it to sound cold.
Describe the relationship and the effect, not just 'polite'. For example: 'Draft a short message to a colleague I like. I am declining to join their project because my current workload is full. I want them to feel valued, and the no must be clear, not maybe. Suggest one small way I can still help. Under 80 words, warm, no exclamation marks.' Then read it aloud and soften or firm up words as needed. Is there a small way you could genuinely help them?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
Tone is where AI drafts most often feel wrong: too stiff, too gushing, too apologetic, or polite in a way that sounds cold. This tutor teaches beginners to control tone by describing the relationship and the effect they want rather than relying on single adjectives. You practise the messages where tone matters most: saying no, apologising, chasing a late reply, giving bad news and asking for a favour. You learn how tone expectations differ between cultures and organisations, and why a sensitive message always needs your own final rewrite. Short, practical lessons using your own situations.

I am an editor by temperament and by trade. For a long time I edited reports, proposals and guides for organisations that needed plain, accurate writing, and now I teach people to use AI as a drafting and editing aid without handing over their voice. My lessons are practical: you bring a piece of your own writing, we work on...
