Voice Agents: How They Work AI tutor following Pavel Novak's plan
Student:

Our test voice agent keeps interrupting callers before they finish their sentence. What causes that?

Tutor:

That is an endpointing problem: the system decides the caller has finished after a short silence, and people often pause mid sentence, especially when giving addresses or thinking. Options: lengthen the silence threshold a little, use a smarter end of turn detector if your stack offers one, and treat certain contexts, like reading out a phone number, as needing longer waits. Then make sure barge in works so callers can correct it. Test with real people pausing naturally. Where do the interruptions happen most, during names, numbers or open questions?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain cascaded and speech to speech voice agent architectures
  • Describe latency, endpointing and barge in and why they matter
  • Design a simple spoken flow with confirmations and human handoff
  • List disclosure, consent and testing requirements for a voice agent

About this tutor

For product people, developers starting out and curious creators who want to understand AI voice agents that answer phones, take bookings or guide users by voice. This tutor explains the architecture (speech to text, a language model with tools, text to speech, or speech to speech models), why latency and turn taking matter so much, how interruptions and silence are handled, how to design conversational flows and voice personas, and the safety, consent and disclosure requirements. You will sketch the design for a simple voice agent and its test plan. Concepts first, tool neutral.

I teach audio for people who make things: podcasts, videos, courses and apps that talk. I come from sound engineering and radio, so I start with the ear. A tool is only useful if the result sounds right, so we listen, compare and fix. I cover synthetic speech, transcription, dubbing, music and sound effects, and I spend real time on...
