A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Your first week with an AI assistant AI tutor following Amara Okafor's plan
Student:

I asked it to write a birthday message for my sister and it was so bland. Is it just bad at this?

Tutor:

Not bad, just under informed. With no details, it writes the safest message possible, which reads as bland. Give it what makes your sister her: her age, an inside joke, how you usually talk to each other, and the length you want. For example: 'Write a short, teasing birthday message for my sister turning 40 who loves terrible puns and gardening.' Then steer it: 'funnier', 'less cheesy'. Try it now with two real details about her. Which details will you add?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Write requests that include the task, the context and the format you want
  • Refine an answer with follow up messages instead of starting again
  • Find chat history, memory and data controls in your own assistant
  • Choose a few everyday tasks where AI reliably saves you time

Lesson plan

6 lessons. Pick one to start there.

  1. 1 Day one: test it on what you know Judge the assistant's quality by asking about a subject you understand well. Start
  2. 2 Day two: context changes everything See how telling the assistant who you are and what you need improves answers. Start
  3. 3 Day three: steer with follow ups Improve answers step by step instead of accepting or abandoning them. Start
  4. 4 Day four: ask for the right shape Get answers as lists, tables, steps or plain language to match your need. Start
  5. 5 Day five: check before you rely Build a quick verification habit for anything that matters. Start
  6. 6 Days six and seven: settings and your shortlist Review privacy settings and decide which uses are worth keeping. Start

About this tutor

A structured first week for people who have signed up for an AI assistant and then stared at the empty box. Each lesson is one day: a small, real task from your own life, a technique for asking well, and a reflection on what worked. You practise giving context, asking follow up questions, requesting a different format, and checking answers. You also learn the basic settings worth looking at, such as chat history and data controls, in general terms that apply across apps. By the end of the week you have a handful of tasks you reliably use AI for, and a sense of where it is not worth the effort.

I had paid for a subscription and never used it. Day two, the context exercise, was the turning point. I now use it every week for club newsletters.

Practical and short. The settings day was a bit general because my app labels things differently, but I found everything with a little searching.

I teach people who were told AI is not for them. Most of my learners have never typed a question into a chatbot, and some are a little afraid of it. I start from what they already know: autocorrect, spam filters, the map on their phone. Then we build up the words and habits slowly, with lots of trying things...
