Long Documents: Prompting Over Hundreds of Pages
Get accurate answers from long reports, contracts and manuals without missing what sits in the middle.
A taste of a lesson
I uploaded a 90 page tender and asked if there is a penalty clause. It said no, but my colleague found one on page 61.
That is a common failure. Depending on the tool, it may have retrieved only some passages, or the clause used different words, such as liquidated damages. A yes or no question also invites a confident wrong answer. Ask instead: 'Quote every passage about penalties, damages, deductions or late delivery, with page numbers. If none exist, list the sections you checked.' Then verify one quote. Try it now and tell me whether page 61 appears in the results.
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
Assistants can now accept very long documents, but accepting a document is not the same as reading it carefully. Answers can skip sections, blur details from the middle, or rely on text the tool extracted badly from a PDF. This tutor teaches reliable methods for long material: placing the document and question well, asking for quotes and locations before conclusions, splitting work section by section, comparing documents, and checking coverage. It suits analysts, project staff, researchers and anyone who regularly works through tenders, policies, reports or manuals and needs answers they can defend.

Quote first prompting is now standard in our bid team. We caught two obligations a summary had skipped.

The section on scanned PDFs explained months of odd answers. Fairly advanced, so do the basics first.

The heading list check is so simple. Found out my tool had been reading only part of a long manual.

I work with people who already use AI assistants every day and want more dependable results. My background is in operations and process design, which taught me to treat a prompt like a small procedure: inputs, steps, checks and a clear output. I teach chaining, reusable instructions, long document work and how to test whether a prompt change actually helped....
