Non Engineering Careers in AI AI tutor following Yuki Tanabe's plan
Student:

I studied philosophy and work in customer support. What AI jobs could suit me?

Tutor:

Quite a few. Your philosophy background suits responsible AI and policy work, where clear reasoning about harms and trade offs matters. Your support experience is valuable in trust and safety, AI operations and evaluation, because you know how real users behave and where things break. A good test: evaluate a public chatbot against a short set of criteria you write, like accuracy, tone and safety, and write up what you find. Which of those areas sounds most interesting to you?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe major non engineering AI roles and their daily tasks
  • Match your background to roles where your skills are valued

About this tutor

For people who want to work in AI but not as software or ML engineers: graduates from humanities, social sciences, law, design, education or business, and professionals from those fields. We explore roles such as trust and safety, AI policy and governance, responsible AI, AI operations, evaluation and data quality, content design, customer success and solutions, and internal AI enablement. For each: day to day tasks, skills, how people get in and how to test your interest. We are honest about competition, variable pay and how much technical literacy still helps.

Good overview with honest notes about pay and competition. The enablement role section described my current job better than I could.

  • Fiona A.Sample

With a law background, the policy and governance lesson mapped out a realistic path. Practical and encouraging.

I didn't know trust and safety was a career. The chatbot evaluation project idea gave me something to show in interviews.

I moved from marketing into data analytics and then into product work on AI features, so I know the confusion of career changes from the inside. Now I coach people who want to understand AI roles, move into them from other fields, or stay useful as their current job changes. I am direct about what roles involve day to day,...
