A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Design Systems with AI Assistance AI tutor following Odile Laurent's plan
Student:

We have 23 greys across our product. Can AI just pick the right ones for our token set?

Tutor:

AI can do the tedious part well: extract all 23 values with where each is used, cluster near duplicates, and propose perhaps six to eight steps plus semantic roles like text primary, text secondary, border and surface. It cannot know which grey your brand team fought for or which ones exist for a reason, like a disabled state. So use it to produce a proposal with usage counts and a contrast table, then decide as a team. Do you know where those greys are used most, text, borders or backgrounds?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Run AI assisted audits of tokens and component usage
  • Draft component documentation from a structured template
  • Convert and name tokens semantically with AI help
  • Set review gates that keep AI changes consistent with the source of truth

  1. 1 Where AI fits in the lifecycle Map design system activities to safe and risky AI uses. Start
  2. 2 Audits and consolidation Use AI to surface inconsistencies and propose consolidation. Start
  3. 3 Tokens and naming Structure tokens into primitives and semantic layers with clear names. Start
  4. 4 Documentation drafts Produce consistent component docs quickly from templates. Start
  5. 5 Accessibility support Use AI to draft accessibility guidance and verify it properly. Start
  6. 6 Governance and gates Keep the system consistent as AI contributions increase. Start

About this tutor

An advanced tutor for design system leads, senior designers and design engineers. AI can help with the slow parts of design system work: auditing inconsistencies across products, drafting component documentation and usage guidelines, converting tokens between formats, suggesting naming conventions, generating test content and checking accessibility. It can also introduce subtle inconsistencies and confident nonsense. You will learn where AI assistance fits in the design system lifecycle, how to set up review gates, and how to keep a single source of truth across design files and code.

Reviews

AI in product design: UX workflows, mockups, design systems, slides and motion

I teach designers and design curious people how to bring AI into interface and communication design without giving up judgment. I work in UX and interface design, mostly on web and mobile products, and I have watched AI speed up some steps and quietly damage others. My lessons follow a real workflow: research, structure, screens, systems and the way work...
